it was the visible that made possible the sayable --Edward Said
There is a quality even meaner than outright ugliness or disorder, and this meaner quality is the dishonest mask of pretended order, achieved by ignoring or suppressing the real order that is struggling to exist and to be served. --Jane Jacobs
[What is your criteria for a finished and successful painting?]
It's out the door. --Matthew Ritchie
Oh! Well, it, it left my hand, unfortunately. --Julie Newmar, accused of egging John Belushi's house

This livejournal began as a three-month art project-- I preserved the original statement of intent below. Now it is a place for me and others to discuss issues related to visual arts. I post my own work and experiences as a jumping-off point for discussion. I also post works in progress, and finished paintings.
If you'd like to subscribe to my blog ("friends"), please do.
At times I do series of works that may be not ok, depending on where you work and live. You may not want your children to see them, depending on your values about such things. And you might not want to see them yourself. Please filter or unsubscribe from my blog as necessary-- and know that you go with my blessings, such as they are.
I'm on facebook, my name or angiereed@gmail.com should find me. I mostly use it to post links, many very political.
My resume and bio are here.
For a longer interview by Amie Gillingham about my process and influences, go here.

This livejournal is dedicated to a three-month art experiment tentatively called "the dealing art project".
For the duration of the experiment, I am committed to creating and carrying on my person small paintings which I will trade or sell for under $30. I will consider (for the purposes of this project) that a painting is only "completed" once it has been placed. After each successful sale or trade, I will post a image of the painting and any comments or stories about the transaction and the painting itself.
Will the process of presenting and marketing my work in such a direct and personal way change how I paint? I wonder which kinds of images will sell or won't appeal to the people I cross paths with day in and day out.
Will I censor my difficult content in response to negative reactions from people? Will my perceptions of "difficult content" change as I reality-test my notions about what kinds of images people find offputting or attractive? Will I spend three months toting about little paintings without finding the courage to unpack them and ask people to have a look?
What happens when the cost of art is reduced-- to the point that the price really isn't a object?
I'm a narrative figurative artist, now living in Chicago. I have been showing and selling my work through the gallery system for nine years. My theory and practice is surrealist.
