Heathcliff in Abu Dhabi
This has nothing to do with art or literature; I've always hoped someone would please write me a novel about the years missing from Wuthering Heights, what Heathcliff was up to all that time out in the world making his fortune. But that is not what you will find behind the lj-cut.

S. and I have temporary housing in Abu Dhabi because our longer-term
housing is under construction. Done October inshallah. So Heathcliff
is staying at a kennel until then.

S. visited and I ~just~ got pictures. I'm so happy!

Here he is, being his rockstar self. This is the courtyard area, kennels to the left.
You don't see any dogs because they are all inside in the air conditioning and do not
care to come out their doggy doors and watch Heathcliff be a rockstar.

Here Heathclif is complaining about how hot the paving stones are. Hot
paving stones are hot.

Let me just admit they are doing a better job keeping him brushed than
I ever have.

Back in the AC. Food and water are off-camera to the left.
Blue thing is his doggy bed.

The kennel staff
seem comfortable with him. They handle him off-leash (only one dog out at
a time) and they point where they need him to go and he goes. Getting him
back in the air-conditioned kennel is never a fight, and he doesn't run up to
the other dog kennels and bark at other dogs.

Heathcliff is also very ingratiating when it is strategic, he puts
thought into trying new things out on people.

He convinced my ~mother~ that he is the Perfect Dog (except for the shedding issue),
and that took some doing as mom is not a dog person and is not charmed by
his standard repertoire of cute poses and adoring gazes.

Here is the front of kennel/clinic--looks deserted, but that's
because dogs don't drive and employees park their cars around the side where
there is more shade.

S. saw really beautiful dogs there--labs and malamutes, a mastiff and
lots of others, as well as various GSDs. I think this is their busy season,
with people vacationing away from the summer heat.

I LOVE him!!! It looks like a very clean place.
Sad that he is stuck there so long!

He's a lucky dog and he likes to board and doesn't pine away. But I miss him so much.

Abu Dhabi is a very walkable city (it is an island around the size of New York, with a oceanfront boardwalk that allows leashed dogs). I love to walk cities...we will have good times I think, once reunited. I needed to SEE Heathcliff was ok so I'm so SO happy for these photos.

I'm reasonably convinced that if I can't take care of him myself, this place is ok. Thank goodness he doesn't get depressed etc.

My dog wishes he was a rockstar like Heathcliff!

Glad the photos helped put your mind at ease & looking forward to reading about your joint adventures in Abu Dhabi. :)

I think Heathcliff sometimes envies cute dogs esp. cute lap-sized dogs. But not when a stranger knocks at the door, then he wants to be a mastiff.

Posh indeed. Round the clock air-conditioning? In the middle of the desert? Few human beings have known that kind of luxury, in the scheme of things. The politics of it are explosive.

This is a great post. Glad he's in such a civilized place.

It looks almost absurdly clean. 24/7 airco andall that water? For dogs, which you surely know are considered unclean by a number of Muslims?

Thing is, Heathcliff is so charismatic that I'd think very few people would be able to resist his charm and wit.

Yay. I hop the 2 of you are reunited sooner rather than later.

I am so glad. He looks really, really good.

UAE is 80% expat, and I think corporate families often bring the family dogs. So the services are well-established and the standards are high.

It is a minor hadith that declares dogs unclean; in the Koran itself, dogs are mentioned only positively. If you ask me, and nobody has, that hadith was/is about running the ragpickers out of the mosques. If the poorest of the poor are ritually unclean from doing the work that they do, picking over the trash that is also where dogs come to scavenge food, that conveniently keeps them from coming into the mosque to pray.

Christianity and other religions of course have similar fits, how to declare all people equally valuable in God's eyes yet keep the undesirables out of the pews you have to sit in.

Do all the dogs there belong to expatriates?

I don't know! Pedigreed dogs as pets are a BIG new thing among Pakistanis with money, but I don't know what is going on with UAE citizens. (I don't necessarily expect to meet any!)

Well, I've read that Muslims regard dogs as unclean but I don't know if this is a stereotype or exaggeration ....

You might see above comment to silverseabear. The Koran is entirely doggy-positive, it is a later hadith which is not.

Behind the chain link is an outdoor area for each dog which they can access through a doggy door, and that is where they generally do their business unless they are confused or not well housebroken. So you have inner air conditioned area+outer area, then courtyard where dogs don't usually have access.

ok angie... you are totally my hero! i've got such respect for you with all your moving around.
especially since i've been struggling so since we've moved to moscow. (and that includes almost 8 weeks in the states visiting family and friends over the summer... although i'm beginning to wonder if that doesn't make it more difficult.)
i'm so thrilled to see that heathcliff has been able to move and is doing well. he looks happy and that must be such a relief to you.
at any rate, i'm back in russia catching up on all that i've let slide over the past weeks. i'll be checking in on you to follow all your excitement.

I ducked this move. When the time came that it was clear we were going to the UAE, I decided (with full support) to sit it out in the States, deal with paperwork from here and let S. go back and finish up with work and move Heathcliff and personal effects. I had some capital-G guilt but also needed to work on getting physically stronger after being sick so much... and did not think if I went back that I would be much help to S. (or even decent company). S. had access to an office with air-conditioning and power all day long at the university, and I would be trying to paint in home studio with power outages of 8+++ hours/per day. Nearly everyone that I know either fled the Lahore summer heat or else was teaching like a fiend with no time to sit around and drink ice tea and have good conversation.

Hope you have time/energy to update soon...even if it is just a post that says uuuggggggggggggghhhhhh.
